#DarkSkinRedLips

This post is a bit late but I still felt the need to post it. About two weeks ago, founder of For Brown Girls (FBG), Kayrn Washington passed. After reportedly suffering from depression after her mother’s passing.  Honestly and sadly I did not come across her sites until after her passing. Her message is so powerful, I needed to share.

FBG was created to celebrate the beauty of dark skin while combatting colorism and promoting self love! FBG was created to celebrate darker shades of brown- to encourage those struggling with accepting having a darker skin complexion to love and embrace the skin they are in.

Washington also began #DarkSkinRedLips Project which is a “campaign that invites women with darker skin complexions to submit and showcase a photo of them rocking a red lip”(DSRL site). As a dark skin woman, I absolutely love this project. Up until last October, I too had been under the impression that dark skin women could not wear red lipstick, pink lipstick or any bright lip color. Had I known about this campaign, I probably would have bought my RiRi Woo sooner.

I thank God I get my complexion from my father who told me daily how beautiful dark skin is. But I know not every dark skin girl has that opportunity. I think it’s important that we teach young girls to love the skin their in.

With such a powerful statement, it breaks my heart that Kayrn passed at age 22. “With losses like these, it’s even more important to spread the word about the realities of these internal battles. Washington was a woman who made a difference and her push to remind us as sistas of our beauty was major (madamenoire).”
